Lecturers across the country are getting ready to take strike action for the time in five years in a row over pensions, pay and jobs.

Members of the Universities and College Union (UCU) in 63 universities will be involved in a series of five strike beginning on March 17 in Scotland, March 18 in Wales, March 21 in Northern Ireland, March 22 in England and UK wide on March 24.

UCU members are striking against proposals to reduce pension benefits, increase contributions and increase the age at which members can retire.

UCU general secretary Sally Hunt said that the level of strike action across the further and higher education sectors is “unprecedented.”

“The attacks on staff's pensions, pay and job security have created real anger throughout the sector and instead of burying their heads in the sand the employers need to respond urgently to UCU's attempts to negotiate.”

The TUC is also staging a day of action in London on March 26 called “March for the Alternative” as a protest against government spending cuts.

It is expected to be one of the biggest protests in several years with almost 600 coaches booked from all over the country, for the event.
