About

IMPORTANT NOTICE

People With Voices has now ceased operations and is no longer offering training or publishing any new articles on this site. This website is now a permanent archive and will remain online so that articles that have been published remain available to read. Many contributors put great efforts into producing quality articles and therefore it is fitting they remain available for public consumption.

Our social aims are :

To encourage participation in the news media among the groups most under-represented as mainstream journalists in the UK. This is important since only 3 per cent of new UK journalists are from a working class background and only 4 per cent of  UK journalists  are from a black or minority ethnic background. (Source: Journalism Training Forum 2002)

In the 21st century, journalism has become an activity that anyone can participate in and is no longer just a profession restricted to those employed in the news industry. We aim to support, encourage and nuture individuals who wish to participate in the news media on their own terms, in their own time and to suit their specific interests.

Services

We offer low-cost, high quality journalism training,  and an online platform for publishing news, features, commentaries and reviews. Our services are available to anyone but we actively target people from working class, black and minority ethnic groups to meet our social objectives. As part of our editorial policy we aim to reflect perspectives and opinions that are often missing from the mainstream media to add more voices to the public domain.

Our website is a showcase of the articles produced by trainees,  bloggers, citizen journalists, freelance writers, reviewers and experienced journalists.  We welcome contributors from all backgrounds and from anywhere in the world!  Our content is free and you do not have to register on this site to submit an article or post a comment!

Who we are

People with Voices CIC was founded by Deborah Gabriel and was launched in April 2009 with start-up funding from UnLtd and the Knowledge East Enterprise Network (KEEN). Channel 4 and More 4 presenter Keme Nzerem was the keynote speaker at the launch event.

How we are structured

  • People with Voices operates purely for social benefit.
  • The small amount of revenue generated from site advertising helps to offset the costs of maintaining the website.
  • We do not employ journalists – our contributors produce content out of a passion for writing, to develop experience in journalism  and to add their voice to the public domain.
  • Our main source of income is derived from our training services . However, we only generate a small amount of revenue from this as we keep  the costs low so that our courses are affordable for our target groups.
