I hear what you are saying. But having read this book, also living in Nigeria and married to a Nigeria, I was fascinated by the similarities. I belong to a similar group, made up of women, and our goals are the same: we are aliens living in an environment which tolerates you; we are also a bunch of people that do not have too much in common with our host groups. We are a disparate group of women where some of us are wealthy, some educated and professionals, some of us with dodgy backgrounds. Some of us are happy to stay - with their husbands or not, and other's fearful of returning (in the case of the British) to a council flat. The thing about this novel is that the views of the 'African' are expressed quietly behind closed doors. The continual complaints about the domestics, the cooks, the gardners are non stop. The other thing about this group some of us are young and there are those who are elderly and responsible for creating Nigerwives, who also belabour the youngesters about how it was back in the day.
This was an interesting read. It was something different as I never thought I'd read a book about my unique situation.

I too fell for the AllWays natural hype when I first discovered natural hair on YouTube. I finished off the bottle of conditioner and now use Giovanni. Every other hair product I use on my hair I make myself. It's very liberating, although I did suffer from product junkism I only succumbed to paraben free conditioners and oils and I use them in my home product recipes.

Hi Jennifer,

I felt sad reading your story it is truly horrible to be confronted with losing your hair. I'm glad you came out the other side a happier person. When I went natural I cut all my hair off and kept that style for about a year-it was the most liberating hairstyle I ever had. I'm glad you made the leap and embraced yourself.

I agree with Kathryn, I've had breast cancer and I have a long-term health condition which must be constantly monitored. I too decided to cut out as many chemicals as I can from my life. I use natural toothpaste, traditional Ghana black soap and make all my own hair and body products. The only hair product I buy now is conditioner - paraben etc free of course. I also don't live a consumer led life, I don't watch TV or go window shopping etc. I do bikram yoga, have acupuncture and see a chiropractor. I have spent, and still do, a lot of time in hospitals under the "care" of doctors.
A natural life is so much better as are alternatives to mainstream healthcare.

Hi Deborah,

I had a similar experience to yours but instead of weaves I went for single plait extensions then lived in twists before I finally locked it twice.
I cut off my locks in 2007 and again kept my hair in twists. During Christmas 2010 I discovered YouTube and KimmayTube, I managed to retain about four inches of hair which I've now trimmed to get a decent shape and get rid of split ends. It really is liberating when you learn how to look after your hair. Now 10 months later I have developed a hair routine and my own leave in, sealant and daily moisturizing spray. I know what my hair likes, how to style it and love my hair 1000 times more than when I first shaved it off over 10 years ago. I'm sticking to protective styling until my natural hair reaches my shoulders, it's great knowing you can enjoy your hair and that it can grow.

A pity you take such a one-sided view. Hundreds of ordinary people have been affected by squatters getting into their homes (using tricks to break in "legally"). Worse, squatters tend to cause damage and leave rubbish, decaying food, and worse, around the house. They have no consideration for the rest of us, so why should we care for them?

I am an unemployed teacher because I wanted to be a mother to my children. I cannot now get employed as a teacher not even an interview. Too many NQTs. How do I get a pension if I cannot do what I trained to do anymore? Appreciate the advice...
